301-3 Which factors affect the powder bulk density and tapped density tester usp

Bulk density depends on the density of powder particles (true density, also known as specific gravity) and the spatial arrangement of the particles in the powder layer.

There are many factors affecting the powder bulk density. For example

  • Powder particle shape
  • Powder particle size
  • Powder surface roughness
  • Powder particle size distribution, etc

Usually these factors are obviously different because of different preparation methods and processing conditions of powder. It is recommended to use LABULK 335 intelligent touch screen tapped density meter and other bulk density meter.

Generally speaking, powder bulk density decreases with the decrease of particle size, the increase of non-spherical coefficient and the increase of surface roughness.

The influence of particle size composition on bulk density is not a single value, and it is usually determined by filling void and bridging. If the latter is dominant, the powder bulk density will decrease. If the former is dominant, the powder bulk density will be increased.

In order to obtain the powder bulk density value, in addition to the above factors, the reasonable grading and batch is also feasible.
